Lists used by Sintel BI
For site owners and administrators
This page is for the people who manage the site's permissions. You don't need it to build dashboards.
When you set up Sintel BI on a site, it creates the lists it needs in that site. They're also updated automatically when you upgrade Sintel BI.
The lists
| List | What it stores | Permissions |
|---|---|---|
| SintelBIInstanceConfiguration | The app's settings: the infrastructure version, general settings, theme and navigation. | Inherited from the site |
| SintelBIConnectors | The connections to the sources data sources read from, such as lists, Excel files and SQL databases. | Inherited from the site |
| SintelBIDataSources | The data sources, with their title, settings and a reference to their connector (where they get their data from). | Inherited from the site |
| SintelBIApps | The Sintel BI apps (app templates) created when you export or import an app, with what each one includes. | Inherited from the site |
| SintelBIDashboards | The dashboards, with their title, identifier (GUID), settings and permissions. | Visitors have Edit |
| SintelBIComponents | The components on each dashboard, with their identifier (GUID), settings and layout, the dashboard and dashboard version they belong to, and the data source they use. | Visitors have Edit |
| SintelBIRecycledDashboards | Deleted dashboards. | Visitors have Edit |
| SintelBISPPrincipals | The users and groups that navigation items have been shared with. | Visitors have Edit |
Don't change these lists
Don't change the lists, their columns or their content. Doing so can break features or cause unexpected behaviour. The one supported exception is securing a dashboard's item in SintelBIDashboards, described in Cannot share dashboards with Entra ID groups.
Why some lists need Edit access
All the lists start by inheriting the site's permissions. For four of them, Sintel BI then breaks the inheritance and gives the site's Visitors group Edit permission:
- SintelBIDashboards
- SintelBIComponents
- SintelBIRecycledDashboards
- SintelBISPPrincipals
When you share a dashboard with a user or group, you can give them view or edit access. Users with edit access change list items in these four lists when they edit the dashboard, so they need Edit permission on them.
This doesn't mean every visitor can edit every dashboard. Sintel BI checks each dashboard's sharing itself, and only lets people change dashboards shared with them as Can edit (site owners can change all of them). See Who can view, edit and build.
A Visitors group is required
Setup gives these permissions to the site's associated Visitors group. If the site has no Visitors group, setup stops with There is no Visitors group associated with this site.
Who should be in the Visitors group
We usually add Everyone except external users to the Visitors group, taking care not to email them. Any other Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) group that contains all the users you need works just as well.
You can also use a different SharePoint group instead of the Visitors group. Create the group, give it Read access to the lists that inherit from the site and Edit access to the four lists above, then add users or Entra ID groups to it.
See Permissions required for the access users need to the site itself.
